Please help us raise $50,000 for SEGA’s Msichana wa Kisasa (Modern Girl) Community Outreach Program in Tanzania.
Secondary Education for Girls’ Advancement (SEGA) is an NGO that educates and equips girls in Tanzania with academic, leadership, and business skills to unleash their individual talents and reach their full potential through three main programs: The SEGA Girls’ Secondary School,Post Form IV Continuing Education Scholarship program , and The Msichana wa Kisasa (Modern Girl) Community Outreach Program. SEGA aims to help solve social issues at a systemic level using its 12 years of experience to influence broad-scale change by being a model for educating vulnerable girls from which others may learn. SEGA empowers girls by giving them the skills they need to become self-sufficient and break the cycle of poverty.
The SEGA Girls’ Secondary School, founded in 2008, is a boarding school which fosters the development of academic excellence, strong values, healthy self-esteem, and independent thinking skills among its students, with an emphasis on leadership, social responsibility, and environmental care. The school currently serves 340 students. The majority of SEGA students were forced to drop-out of school due to extreme poverty, or were deemed at high risk of dropping out, but are bright and motivated. They have been selected from 25 different communities from throughout the country. Some of the girls are orphans and all come from families who are unable to pay the school fees necessary for them to enter secondary school. Thanks to SEGA these girls are now able to continue their studies.

Support the Msichana wa Kisasa Community Outreach Program
SEGA also implements the Msichana wa Kisasa (Modern Girl) Community Outreach Program (MK), which brings key elements of the SEGA Girls' School's successful Education for Life Program to girls in communities throughout Tanzania delivered through a girls' club setting by trained mentors. Through the MK program, SEGA has scaled its services beyond the student population reached at its boarding school and impacts hundreds more extremely vulnerable girls during the critical age when they are most at risk of early pregnancy, early marriage, and dropping out of school. Led by an all-female staff and utilizing SEGA graduates and community girls as peer mentors, the program delivers key trainings in sexual reproductive health, HIV/AIDs awareness, pregnancy prevention, girls' rights, and financial literacy.
In addition, the program links girls to other local youth forums in each geographic area to further promote their skills in advocacy, public speaking and community engagement through the “Empowered Girls' Network”.
SEGA’s MK program reaches girls ages 10-21 in 20 communities in the Morogoro, Iringa, Dodoma, Mvomero, and Mvuha districts, and currently serves more than 900 girls per year. Five field officers supervise and conduct weekly trainings for 38 mentors who lead the MK program sessions. The program expects to continue scaling over time and will add five new centers in both rural and pre-urban areas in the next year. MK also offers a "Phase 2" program that supports business development for MK graduates ages 17-25.
How will our project impact girls and their community?
The goal of SEGA’s MK program is to provide a safe and fun learning environment where girls learn various critical life skills to develop confidence and become leaders in their families and communities. The knowledge and skills gained in the program help girls feel confident and empowered in asserting their rights and protect them from harm and threats to their health. With the funds raised for this project, SEGA aims to reach 250 more girls through this program.Participants find that the program's activities provide beneficial lessons and much-needed skills for their everyday lives. Activities such as entrepreneurship sessions and health seminars, in particular, are among the girl's favorite activities. In addition, the program provides safe space for girls where they can share experience and form self-help groups that would be a platform for preventing and responding to the incidents of sexual gender-based violence. Lastly, the program improves collaboration between SEGA and the community. The program allows the MK members to participate in international advocacy events such as International Women's Day, Day of the African Child, International Day of the Girl Child and 16 days of activism to challenge harmful community norms.
Girls participating in the program often in turn share the knowledge and skills they gain with parents, siblings, and neighbors, creating a positive ripple effect.
