Seizures, Kidney Cancer & Brain Cancer, OH MY!
Donation protected
Hi everyone! My husband, Lucas Askins and myself are humbly asking for donations to help with current and upcoming medical expenses as he continues on this long medical journey.
Before these events took place, Luke was in the best physical shape of his life. And to this day, he is feeling completely normal. Unfortunately, we have received some rather big news regarding his health.
Around 2:19 am on 4/19, Luke had a seizure. I called the squad, we went to ER, and he was back to normal. All bloodwork and urine tests were normal, so we were sent home to monitor. Normal for a one-off seizure.
Around 10:59 am that same day, Luke got up to go pee (we didn’t get back to bed til 5 am after the ER trip). He ended up having another seizure while he was standing in the bathroom. Hit his head on the wall as he was going down, but I heard the commotion start and was able to get to him before his head hit the floor.
Another squad ride to the ER where they ordered a brain CT. Unfortunately, it came back abnormal and showed that Luke has a baseball size tumor on the left frontal lobe of his brain. They then ordered a brain MRI and set up transport to Riverside. There they ordered a full body CT to check for additional tumors. Sadly, that showed a 3cm tumor on his right kidney :( They also ordered a nuclear bone scan and thankfully, that was normal. Both the neurosurgeon and oncologist believe the two are not related. They said the one in the kidney is cancer until proven otherwise, but feel the brain is not cancerous. They also saw a 2mm nodule on one of his lungs, however, they are not concerned about it currently. It is something we will keep an eye on moving forward.
He was immediately started on a steroid to help reduce swelling in the brain and seizure prevention medication.
They are more concerned about the kidney as they believe it to be cancerous, so that is what will be addressed first. We saw the urologist this Monday and have surgery planned to take out part of his kidney on May 22nd. The great news here is that if they get good margins, this will be curative! He will be down and out for at least two weeks for this surgery.
Here is a little schedule of events in the near future...
May 8 - Appointment with the Neurologist
May 10 - MRI to recheck the brain tumor and see if there have been any changes
May 10 - Appointment with the Oncologist
May 15 - Appointment with the Neurosurgeon to discuss MRI results and to develop a plan for the brain tumor
May 22 - Kidney surgery day!
I know this is a lot to read. It was a lot to take in as our lives completely changed in under 19 hours.
We are all (our London included, she is so wildly strong <3) staying super positive. We will #ManifestPositivititties throughout this entire journey!
As you can imagine, news like this comes with incredibly steep medical expenses. In just one short day Luke had 2 CTs, 2 MRIs, a Nuclear bone scan, 2 squad rides, countless blood tests and an overnight hospital stay. And this is just the beginning. We truly appreciate any help you're able to provide. Whether it's a donation, sending good vibes, prayers, etc... anything. It really does mean more to us than you will ever know.
We will continue to provide updates as they come in. If you have any questions, please reach out to either of us :)
