Medical Mission Trip to Honduras 2024

Donation protected
Hi! My name is Selena Alamir and I am a current senior at John Carroll University graduating in December of 2023. As a pre-med student, I decided to take the non-traditional approach by majoring in Spanish and minoring in Peace, Justice, and Human Rights. My mission is to combine medicine, social justice, and languages to help improve healthcare accessibility across the globe--one person at a time.

In May of 2022, I visited Sociedad Amigos de los Niños, a non-profit organization. I led a public health immersion to Honduras with my university, conducting medical brigades in remote mountain villages. Our group brought over 50 luggages of medical supplies, distributed water filters, and collected data to improve water quality. Sociedad's mission is to provide comprehensive care, including homes for children, healthcare access to neighboring communities, and free education.

As a Syrian-American dual-citizen, my goal is to learn about global injustices and become trilingual in Arabic, English, and Spanish. Before starting medical school in the Fall of 2024, I will be spending my gap semester volunteering alongside the same physicians from the immersion. Together, we will provide accessible healthcare through Sociedad Amigos de los Niños, to care for children, families, and communities in need.

During my time in the country, I will volunteer in the clinic and assist with medical brigades. In my free time, I will be working with the children, teaching them English in their homes and in a classroom. This mission trip is an opportunity for me to contribute to a better healthcare system on an international level, improve my Spanish-speaking abilities while simultaneously helping others learn English, and deepen my faith through encounters with others. Donations will support my expenses for housing, meals, and transportation. Any surplus funds will be directly donated to the clinic!

If you are willing and able, I would be so grateful to receive a donation from you. If you cannot donate at this time, please keep the volunteers and the people of Honduras in your thoughts and prayers!

God bless,
Selena
