Hi my name is
Josmine i am a culinary cultural preservationist cook educator and farmer
With a matriarchal lineage from Virginia and a patriarchal lineage from Louisiana, I was born and raised in occupied Ohlone territory, aka Oakland, CA.
Food became the medium through which I began, and continue, to explore my identity and the identities of my ancestors. That exploration has inspired my travels throughout the the globe collecting food stories, making connections and building relationships. I then bring those experiences back home and offer them to my communities through my project Indigo Culinary co and as a steward with the joy project which is a living archive of afro Atlantic agriculture and food ways
My travels have included a fellowship with roots to glory and the cooking gene where i join a collective of chefs (James Beard Award winning culinary historian Michael TWITTY, One of my favorite human beings on the planet, Curtis the Collard Green King. Gullah Geeche cultural preservationist BJ Dennis, Historic interpreter my Uncle Harold Caldwell, Louisianas own Chef Kenyatta Ashford, Agricultural Activis Lol Gibson Berg, the Pitmaster Devon Hamilton) making pilgramages to West Africa to research traditional Foodways. We’ve now been to 5 west African Countries. Ghana, Benin, Togo, Senegal and The Gambia.
The pandemic interrupted us but next year we’re headed to Cameroon next year
