I have an sudden opportunity to return to the southern border on Thursday and Friday of this week. I'll be going to Tuscon to help with "Flores inspections" of Customs and Border Patrol facilities for children. Flores is the case from the 1990s that now governs (or is supposed to govern) how children are treated in immigration detention. Flores inspections in June made headlines when they revealed children drinking from toilets. When the government tried to defend these conditions in court, it said "safe and sanitary" does not necessarily include soap or toothbrushes. You remember.
The Flores Settlement gives plaintiffs' counsel the right to inspect the facilities, and my trip will be part of their effort. The team will enter the facilities, inspect them, interview the children, and report back to plaintiffs' counsel. This opportunity came up just a few hours ago, and I am quickly putting together a travel plan.
My friends and family, and their friends and family, were very supportive last year when I asked for money to go to Tornillo, the former tent city near El Paso. I'm once again hoping that you will help offset the cost of this trip. Last year, I actually ended up with more money than I needed and was able to go on a second trip, to the Rio Grande Valley. If something similar happens this time, I'll start planning my next trip to the border. But for now, I'm just hoping you will help me get to Tuscon and back.
Thank you very much,
Kelly
