Send Nathan to the Blues Brothers Convention!

Hi, my name is Nathan Rabin and I am on a mission from God!

First, a little about me. I have been writing about pop culture for 25 years, primarily as the head writer for The A.V Club back in the day.

I love to go places, take various substances and have crazy adventures. That was the essence of You Don't Know Me But You Don't Like Me, one of the eight books I have written about comedy, pop culture and mental illness.

AND, like many members of my generation, I am obsessed with Saturday Night Live and its first batch of breakout stars.

So when I learned that there would be a Blues Brothers convention IN Joliet prison featuring a concert headlined by the Blues Brothers (or at least Aykroyd and Jim Belushi), a gospel service and a big screening of a certain film (that's right: Blues Brothers 2000), I knew I had to go and do my Hunter S. Thompson routine.

Unfortunately, this is the kind of buffoonery the media does not sanction or fund. So I am appealing to you, fellow Blues Brothers' fans, to make this goofy boyhood dream of mine a reality. Take the trip alongside me, vicariously, as I down Dan Aykroyd's Crystal Skull Vodka, smoke Blues Brothers-branded official marijuana from Belushi's massive pot farm and consume my share of Orange Whips.

At the end I'll write a lengthy essay about the weekend that explores just what it is about this silly, self-indulgent comedy made by twenty-something stoners that makes it so damn irresistible and weirdly enduring.
