Thank you for your interest in helping me raise money to complete my Master's program!
Back in the Fall of 2016 I took the leap and enrolled in my local university's Interior Architecture program, embarking on a long-held wish to become a designer. Although the program was difficult I knew I had made the right decision to gain tangible skills to support my appreciation for livable and workable spaces. However, going back to school brought to light underlying challenges I had been able to overcome in the workplace. Namely, a learning disability that I was able to mask pretty efficiently in non-academic spaces, made my day to day experiences frustrating to say the least. Working with Student Health Services I learned about this disability (like many others, I used masking behaviors to hide the truth of my condition not just to others, but myself), and how it impacted my learning style, and how I function in the world in general.
During this time I was also trying to find an internship so I could complete required credits, and come up with $10,000 so I could enroll in a final semester of classes. It was, a lot. At a certain point, something had to give, so I made the decision to leave school.
As the past few months have shown, my situation is pretty common. This country has a long way to go if we want to create a more equitable space where everyone is able to rise to their full potential. Also, as we've all experienced, how we navigate space will be an ongoing discussion long after we get a handle on this current pandemic. Like many I've been thinking about the role I want to play now, and when this is over, so I've made the decision to go back to school. This time I am asking my community for help. Help to cover my school fees. Help to cover my living expenses. Help to attend therapy on a regular basis. I want my voice and experience to be a part of shaping what comes next. What do you think?
