Send Pua'ena Ahn to Jeju Island
Donation protected
Pua’ena Ahn is a Native Hawaiian sovereignty activist who lives on the Big Island of Hawaii. He is also part-Korean, part-Okinawan, part-Chinese, and part-Filipino. That’s right – his DNA reads like a Pentagon playlist of U.S. occupation (see Pua'ena at 22:54 of video above).
This year, 2018, is the fifth year of "Peace for the Sea" camp, a remarkable gathering of impassioned young people from East Asia who convene to discuss how ramped-up militarism is taking a brutal toll on islands in the region. “Peace Camp” participants hail from Taiwan, Jeju, Okinawa, and other Asia-Pacific islands that suffer from a heavy U.S. military presence.
But due to distance, expense, and language barriers, no young indigenous person from a U.S.-occupied island, such as Pua'ena from Hawaii, has ever been able to participate in Peace for the Sea Camp.
If Pua'ena is able to attend this year's Peace Camp in Jeju Island, South Korea, this summer, his presence will be a huge, strengthening opportunity for pan-Pacific peace and solidarity.
Once in Jeju, Pua'ena will be able to share what it is like to be both an unwilling citizen of a perpetrating empire, and a native Hawaiian forced to witness the continual desecration of his archipelago nation. In turn, he will learn of the challenges of militarism faced by other islanders across the Asia-Pacific. In addition, he will keep the rest of us updated on his adventures, through live-stream internet reports from Peace Camp, which will include daily protests, prayers and police actions at the ground-zero entrance to the Jeju navy base.
We are working to raise $2,500 for Pua'ena's travel from Hawaii to Jeju Island. Can you please contribute $25, $50, $100 or more? Sending Pua'ena to Jeju is an invaluable opportunity to establish solidarity between the next generation of Asia-Pacific peace activists.
Thank you for your support! Mahalo nui! Salamat! Xie Xie! Gamsahamnida! Si yuus maase! Nifee deebiru!
