Queen Quet is Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) and Founder of the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition . She has dedicated decades of her life ensuring that her native Gullah/Geechee homeland on the Sea Islands and the traditions therein will continue to exist for generations to come. This work has allowed her to be the first native Gullah/Geechee to ever speak before the United Nations Human Rights Commission on behalf of her people. She has not stopped taking Gullah/Geechee issues to the global stage since then.
Queen Quet has been invited to return to the United Nations COP 27 in Egypt to speak on the ways that her community is fighting to hold onto their land in the face of climate change issues including sea level rise, flooding, and the intensity of hurricanes and tropical storms. They have put together their own Gullah/Geechee Sustainability Plan that includes various means of using green infrastructure and best practices of adaptation to protect the Sea Islands off the southeastern coast of the United States. This plan centers the protection of coastal indigenous cultural heritage communities. Many organizations and communities are interested in learning more about community engagement and sustainability from the Gullah/Geechee. So, we are calling on you to help get Queen Quet to this global event to present on behalf of the Gullah/Geechee Nation once again.
From 6 to 18 November, Heads of State, ministers and negotiators, along with climate activists, mayors, civil society representatives and CEOs will meet in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for the largest annual gathering on climate action.
The 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – COP27 – will build on the outcomes of COP26 to deliver action on an array of issues critical to tackling the climate emergency – from urgently reducing greenhouse gas emissions, building resilience and adapting to the inevitable impacts of climate change, to delivering on the commitments to finance climate action in developing countries. The Gullah/Geechee need to be represented in these discussions. We hope that you will contribute to this worthy cause.
As Queen Quet has said on her many journeys around the world, "Hunnuh mus tek cyare de root fa heal de tree" and she seeks to be one of the global leaders that can help to create tools that will help us to heal the earth and the world.
