Find a cure for Taryn's Epilepsy

Donation protected

My sister Taryn McCaffrey was diagnosed with epilepsy at 5 years old. It was difficult to stabilise her epilepsy however it was managed for several years. At 14 years of age our family noticed Taryn started having nocturnal seizures again and in response there has been many hospital visits for weeks at a time and testing to attempt to manage Taryn's epilepsy. Taryn is now 19 years of age and is taking two types of medication at extremely high dosages to attempt to manage her epilepsy with a third one recently prescribed. Despite the high dosages of antiseizure medication, Taryn is still having seizures some lasting for 3 or 4 minutes without any oxygen supply to her brain creating irreversible brain damage every time this occurs. This ultimately affects her memory severely and higher cognitive functioning but as this progresses there is not sure way of predicting what other areas of the brain could be severely damaged. Currently Taryn's right hemisphere of the brain is not functioning properly. Due to the high dosages of medication needed to reduce the severity of her seizures, the doctor has recommended that during Taryn's early adulthood, she will require a kidney transplant and possibly other organs if she continues to take these medications. Recently, in the last 6 months to a year Taryn's epilepsy has become worse, she now frequently has seizures while she is awake during the day affecting her ability to function and perform tasks.  She has exhausted every treatment avenue in Australia and now requires more sensitive equipment which American can offer to help get some answers and peace of mind. America has the world’s leading epilepsy clinic in the world and Taryn would be travelling to see one of the top Epileptologists in the world. Epilepsy has not only invaded Taryn's life biologically but socially and mentally as well. As tiredness is a trigger for the onset of Taryn's seizures she is unable to work and has recently been forced to seek the disability pension at just 19 years old. Taryn is unable to drive and hence is often stuck at home feeling trapped and depressed with a limited social life. There is also a horrible stigma attached to epilepsy which caused her to be the subject of bullying during high school. This has detrimentally affected Taryn's self-confidence and self-image as she is embarrassed by what people might think of her condition further adding to her states of depression.  The longer Taryn is left with this crippling condition the higher the chances are that one day in the future this may take her life. Her neurologist has recommended having testing done in America in order to pin point the location of Taryn's seizure so that she may have lifesaving brain surgery. My family does not have the money in order to do this and although we don't expect to raise all of the money, we appreciate immensely any kind donations which will contribute to improving Taryn's quality of life. She is a bright, bubbly, kind and generous person who has always dedicated her time to helping others. She loves volunteering to help the local children at our netball club, she has helped organise many fundraisers for other as well and is an extremely dedicated friend and family member. Every cent counts towards our cause, please if you are in a position to help we would appreciate your generosity.
