Hi, My name is Etana and I'm the first woman to make the national butchery team. In 2025 Team USA will be competing in Paris for the world title at WBC (World Butcher's Challenge). This is the Olympics of butchery!

This opportunity means the world to me for many reasons, and to represent female butchers on the world stage is a dream. In a male dominated field it was a struggle for me to get my foot in the door. When I was looking for an apprenticeship I was turned away from many shops because they didn't hire women to cut meat. When I finally was hired in the meat department of a grocery store I still had to fight for every chance to learn how to cut and gain knowledge so I wasn't just a "counter girl". With every adversity I faced as a woman in the butchery world, it fueled me to aim higher in my career and break barriers. The hundreds of hours I've spent on the block honing my knife skills, and the mentors I've found along the way have made it all worth it. To me, making the national team is not just a win for me, but for all women in this field. Creating space for us to shine and be represented alongside the best. Especially as a Latina, I now get to represent apart of my culture on this team.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the World Butcher's Challenge (WBC) it's a competition that happens every few years in a different part of the world. Last go around 13 countries competed. Each having 3 hours to break down a side of beef, side of pork, a whole lamb, and 5 chickens into a complete display. With only 6 members on the team, each person has a specific role to ensure the team finishes on time (i.e. breaker, finisher, garnisher...).

Over the next year our team will meet once a month to practice and dial in our display. With that said I’m raising 15k that will go towards getting the team to Paris (flights, boarding, all the practice meat). In advance I appreciate all of your generosity and helping me pursue my biggest dream.
