Palmetto Senior High School Drama has been given an amazing opportunity, and we need your help to make this dream a reality! We have been chosen to take our smash musical, The Drowsy Chaperone, to the Florida State Thespian Festival from March 19-24, 2019. We are one of only seven troupes to be chosen to present our full, main-stage musical at the largest high school theater festival in the world! Each year, over 10,000 students from around the state gather in Tampa to celebrate all aspects of live theatre! This year, our 43 students have been selected to perform in Morsani Hall at the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts in front of 2,600 of their peers!
This has been a very exciting year for Troupe 1298 as they also received the spectacular accolade of being nominated for nine regional Jimmy Awards. The National High School Musical Theater Awards, aka The Jimmy® Awards, are named in honor of James M. Nederlander, legendary Broadway theatre owner and producer. Referred to as the High School Tony Awards, productions are reviewed by a professional panel of judges and finalists move on to the Regional finals (the Broadway Star of the Future Awards). Regional finalists then compete for the opportunity to attend "The Jimmys," the national competition (and show) on Broadway! Last year's Best Actor winner, 11th grader Andrew Barth Feldman, is the new Evan Hansen on Broadway! Many finalists have moved on to successful, professional, Broadway careers. This talented group is proud to be the first recipient of this honor in Miami-Dade County, receiving 9 nominations: Best Musical, Best Director, Best Musical Director, Best Actress, two Best Actor nods, Best Supporting Actress, Best Costume Design & Best Set Design!
As we all know, with great power comes great responsibility and that is where YOU come in. Traveling a show in this way, similar to a Broadway tour, is very expensive. We need to rent expensive, professional sound equipment, provide truck transportation for our entire set and costumes, remount our lighting, provide thousands of programs, etc...and become proficient and professional enough to walk in the door of this prestigious theatre, build our entire set, hang our lights, get our actors in costume and make-up, produce our full show, pack it all back up in the truck, and vacate the building, in less than a 10 hour time period! What an experience! Our students already pay $600 apiece to attend the State Festival which only covers their registration, bus transportation and accommodations for the week. To accomplish all of this, they will need so much more. This incredible experience will cost an additional $30,000.
These kids have worked tirelessly on this production. They've rehearsed daily, often late into the night. The crew has spent countless endless hours getting things done behind the scenes done, so that everything is perfect. They continue to study with professionals in the field and learn more about how touring, professional productions work. They are thrilled, committed, and professional, and they deserve this more than you can imagine! Please help us make their dreams come true. Please help them achieve what every young person who has ever taken the stage dreams of--the thrill of a lifetime to have this professional opportunity! Please give them a moment they will cherish forever! Let them look out to a sea of 2,600 cheering thespians and know you helped to make it all possible! Please give what you can and become a part of this journey with all of us! We thank you from the bottom of our grateful, thespian hearts!
