LASC Mutual Aid Fund for Pandemic Relief
Donation protected
In the spirit of emergent strategy, and in light of UGLY the Revival being postponed indefinitely, we are now shifting the purpose of this fundraiser towards raising money to aid sick and disabled LGBTQIA+ folks in surviving the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope that you will not object to your donation being repurposed in this way, given the circumstances, and we are forever grateful for your support.
Going forward, our first priority for donated funds will be ensuring that our collective members have what they need as far as food, shelter, clothing, medications and medical equipment/supplies, and transportation. Towards that end, the first disbursement of monies already raised will go to our members who have the greatest need. A second round will go to those with less urgent need, and these rounds will continue as long as money keeps coming in. In order to facilitate accountability, these disbursements will be made in the form of gift cards for local grocery stores (where possible and practical).
A portion of donated monies will be reserved for funding two new LASC mutual aid programs:
a regional network for bulk supply storage, and
a grocery store delivery program for members (and potentially community) that cannot shop for themselves due to whatever reason (i.e. transportation issues, immunocompromised status)
We hope you will continue to boost this fundraiser, even more so now that our very survival is being threatened. Disabled folks have historically had to fend for ourselves in crises like these, and the most marginalized of us will almost certainly fall through the holes of whatever threadbare government safety net is deployed in response. This moment can be a turning point. Let’s start building the new world right now by prioritizing the protection of disabled folks in real, material ways.
