Send the team to WIKF Global Cup in London England

My name is Abigail Johnson, I am 16 years old and a rising junior in high school, I have a 5.0 GPA and plan to take 5 A.P courses this year.  I started when I was 8 years old.  I tried many different sports and activities over the years, basketball, volleyball, cross country, show choir among others.  I have found that I truly have a passion for karate.

I want to tell you about the family I was born into and the family I found at Carolina Karate in Greenville, South Carolina.  But first let me tell you why I’m asking for donations.  Karate is an expensive sport, this year the Carolina Karate Competition team has traveled to Atlanta, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Las Vegas, Texas, Chicago and we are now preparing to travel to London England for the 9th WIKF Global Cup in London England.  This is a great opportunity for the team to test themselves against athlete from all over the world.

I am the second of four sisters, Victoria, Mattie and Phoebe.  My sister Victoria is three years older than me and is severely handicapped.  Thankfully my friends and family have been very supportive of Victoria despite her differences.  My grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer before I was born and had major surgery, they day I came home from the hospital after I was born.  She fought and dealt with breast cancer for 11 years and I was fortunate to have that time with her.  When I was ten my father was diagnosed with cancer and had to have surgery to remove a foot of his lower intestines and 70% of his liver.  My friends and their families helped tremendously while my dad recovered.

Through karate I realize my family has expanded as everyone in the Carolina Karate dojo looks out for each other as family.  If you need a ride to a tournament, a ride from school to train or something as simple as a snack before competition we are truly a family.  Let me introduce you to the rest of my family.

Sensei Tommy Hood head instructor at Carolina Karate, 6th degree black belt, a 10-time National Champion, 3-time USCO Athlete of the Year, was on the US National Karate Team for 14 years and more importantly a great role model to his students.  He expects his students to do their best to learn the art and science of Karate, he places even more emphasis on them learning positive character values, leadership skills and good sportsmanship. The respect he demonstrates and expects from his students carries over to the classroom. He gets to know his kids on a one on one basis, taking the time each class to talk to them and ask about their day. With a good sense of humor, Sensei will frequently gather the kids around to talk about rules of life and have the kids to repeat such mantras as “Don’t Lie, Don’t Cheat, Don’t Steal and Never hang around people who do”. Parents refer to him as much more than an instructor to their children.

Portia Fish started karate when she was 7 years old. She began competing at an elite level when she was 14 years old. This will be her second time attending the 9th WIKF Global Cup in London England. She is the big sister to everyone in the dojo and a great instructor.

Zaylin Pinto started karate when he was 11 years old. He began competing at an elite level when he was 13 years old. This will be his second time attending the 9th WIKF Global Cup in London England.

Allan (AJ) Fish started karate when he was 11 years old. He has been competing at an elite level since he was 14 years old. This will be his second time attending the 9th WIKF Global Cup in London England.

Molly McHenry started karate when she was 5 years old. She has been competing at an elite level since she was 12 years old. This will be her second time attending the 9th WIKF Global Cup in London England.

Connor Martinez started karate when he was 7 years old. This is his first competing at an elite level and his second time attending the 9th WIKF Global Cup in London England.

Caleb Hood started karate when he was 6 years old.  This is his first competing at an elite level and his first time attending the 9th WIKF Global Cup in London England.

This is an amazing opportunity for the Carolina Karate Competition team anything you can contribute to our goal is greatly appreciated.  We are only three weeks away from the tournament and the team is training every day and getting ready for the start of the school year.  Every dime you contribute will go a long way to helping the team cover their expenses to compete against the best in the world.  Thank you for taking the time to read this and please pass along the link to all your friends.
