Go Back to Africa

Peace friends,

An opportunity to go to Nigeria has recently arisen, and I'm looking to my friends and family to help me get there! These are a few of my objectives for the trip:

1) Pay respects at my father's gravesite
2) Meet my paternal grandmother
3) Attend the funerals of my partner's grandparents.

As a Nigerian-American abolitionist organizer, the year 2020 has done nothing but further solidified my abolitionist values and politic.  As the language we've uplifted around abolition spreads across continents;

- My DC students scream #AbolishPolice & #PoliceFreeSchools to the befuddlement of anti-Black Mayor Bowser.

- The youth in my hometown of Iowa City scream 'Defund ICPD' against the Black neoliberal mayor.

- The youth in my mother's hometown of Queensbridge scream "Fuck 12" to the most violent police force in US HIstory

- The youth in my father's village of Mgbowo scream "#ENDSARS" police impunity

The demand is clear to anybody who values Black Youth. Even as the world seems to crumble around us, my trust in the liberatory potential Black youth is unwavering.

2020 has been one of the biggest years of my personal life. I took on a life-changing co-chairship in my political home BYP100 DC Chapter (BYP100.org),  I've supported a landscape-shifting #PoliceFreeSchoolsDC campaign with BlackSwanAcademy (BlackSwanAcademy.org), and grew alongside the mighty Ward 7 & 8 mutual aid network over the last seven months.

2021 is also the 25th anniversary of my father, Okechukwu Seniors', death. Due to the circumstances of my father's killing in 1996, I (along with my siblings) were never able to attend his funeral or visit his gravesite. The opportunity to pay respects to my late father and connect with my grandmother is unexplainable. This is also an opportunity to connect to my Nigerian roots in hopes to sharpen my internationalist lens and overall commitment to Black liberation.

These funds will help me pay for identification and passport fees, travel shots and medication, flight and lodging, food and transportation, funds for my family and my grandmother, covid precautions and other additional costs during this trip.

I am excited and anxious but am leaning into vulnerability and community. Thank you in advance for the support and love.
