Guyana - The World Factbook
Hello Everyone!
As you all know, I am currently in the Dental Hygiene program at Ferris State University. I am loving every moment of it and I am so excited to be a part of this amazing journey to the country Guyana.
Guyana is a small, English-speaking country located in northern South America and is bordered by Brazil, Venezuela, and Suriname. It has a population of roughly 800,000 people and is known for having the largest unspoiled rainforests in South America.
Each spring break in March, a group of 2nd year dental hygiene students, along with a team of dentists, dental assistants, and other volunteers, travel to Guyana to provide free dental services to the population. This past year alone, the group treated roughly 500 patients in only 4 days. Many, if not all, of these people cannot afford dental treatment and are greatly appreciative of the services we provide.
Culturally, I will be exposed to a unique part of the world. The Dutch helped develop a significant part of the country. It has a recent history of being a Communist Country until about 1990. There is a large population of Eastern Indians. Several religions are present in the country including Christianity, Hinduism and Muslims. Sugar cane production is an important part of the economy.
Spiritually, I will be able to see God working in a different way in a different part of the world. While the patients, Hindus, Muslims, Unbelievers, etc. are waiting to be seen, they will be given the Gospel message by local Pastors and the opportunity to make a decision for Christ. The Dental team will provide much desired services and be the instrument to bring the people for evangelism.
This trip will not only be an excellent experience for me, but also very memorable. How awesome it would be if I could share and administer my knowledge in dental hygiene in the country of Guyana! The cost of my trip is $2,000 which includes my individual cost to go as well as dental supplies which we take with us.
I pray God has encouraged your heart to partner with me, and thank you so much!
