Help Send Kobane Back Home!
Meet Kobane, the lovable, happy-go-lucky, 1 year old Labrador from South Africa! Kobane is currently stuck in Canada.
This is Kobane's story, and also our story.
'We' are Courtney and Carli - a Canadian and a South African respectively who have recently been married and are trying everything we can to stay together, and to get home to South Africa.
We adopted Kobane as a puppy while we were living in South Africa, with every intention of staying in South Africa. But, as governments seem to do, we got a big challenge thrown at us in the guise of new visa legislation. Courtney's visa was void, and she had to leave the country to figure out how to be with Carli. At the same time as the visa legislation changed, things at work went sour and Carli decided to leave. We piled all of our meager savings together and off the three of us flew to Canada (after another visa application to get Carli able to visit Canada).
When we got settled in Canada we got married! And now Courtney can apply for a spousal permit and our little family of three can live happily every after in South Africa, which we consider to be home.
But?
We can't afford to fly Kobane back to South Africa.
But why?
- as a foreigner on a visitors permit, Carli is not able to work while in Canada
- due to the job market, Courtney has only been able to find minimum wage employment
- it costs $2500 alone for Kobane's airfare from Boston to Johannesburg, and on top of that there is getting him to Boston, mandatory vet visits, a kennel, expensive visa applications and piles and piles of paperwork, not to mention our own international flights
AND Carli's visitor's visa will be expired in early September, meaning she has to return alone to South Africa without her new wife and furbaby. Without knowing when we will all be able to be together again. We have spent the majority of our relationship apart and would really, really, really love not to have to do it again. We would also really, really, really love to keep our little family together!
And so, here we are, asking anyone who is able to help us get our puppy back home to South Africa, so the three of us can continue being together.
We are scrounging every penny that we can to try and finance our own flights, visa applications, Kobane's vet requirements and kennel, but this big, looming $2500 freight charge for him is holding us back.
If you can spare anything at all, even $1, please, help us bring Kobane home.
(Not sure? Feel free to contact us if you'd like more on our story, and our predicament! We are more than happy to answer any questions at all.)
