We're dropping everything to go volunteer with Syrian refugees. We could really use some money.
Last year, Macedonia/FYROM slammed its border shut, trapping dozens of thousands of Syrian refugees in Greece. Stuck in ad hoc camps, thousands of migrants endured a grueling winter - and with climbing temperatures, an expected summer influx of new migrants and no political resolution, the situation is likely to worsen.
While some camps are in vacation areas and in cities, many are in less populated and attractive locations. So despite the dire situation, these more remote camps like Kilkis, Ritsona and others receive relatively little attention, funding and volunteers.
So why would we want to drop everything and go volunteer and live there? Part of it is that like many American Jews, both of us are the descendants of refugees who themselves fled violence. Second, after speaking to coordinators at Idomeni, they made it clear that even semi-skilled young professionals like ourselves are very much needed. Lastly, we have the privilege and access to resources to make going possible, including a few more months of Obamacare (26 here we come).
Your donations will provide us the following critical resources (estimates from current Idomeni volunteers)
- $300 for our sleeping bags, tents and emergency supplies. Should the Greek government evacuate the camp, we require the ability to become entirely self reliant as we relocate to new camp locations.
- ~$350/month for access to a rental car for trucking volunteers and supplies to and from the remote camp.
- ~$10/day each for food and water.
- $500 once for contingency medical attention, repairs etc.
