September – a Female-Led Film on Education & Period Poverty

Donation protected
We’re raising funds for "September," an intimate yet urgent short film exploring the realities of students like Tamsin, whose future is shaped by a system that doesn’t support her, and Ms. Platt, a teacher learning what it means to be powerless in the face of inequality.

A 14 year old girl is in trouble at school. There’s one teacher who can get through to her and with her help, the girl begins to engage. However, the rules mean all, or nothing. It’s only when it’s too late that she understands conforming is all that will save her. Set in one classroom, over an academic year, we watch the story pass by.

Told entirely within a single classroom, the film unfolds over a school year as these two unlikely figures build an unspoken bond. Tamsin is defiant, struggling to conform, while Ms. Platt tries—and ultimately fails—to shield her from the harsh realities of an education system that lets students like her slip through the cracks. When Tamsin is caught taking period products from Ms. Platt’s bag, she’s expelled—another student lost to a system designed without her in mind.

Why This Story Matters
  • 1 in 10 girls in the UK can't afford period products, leading to missed school days and academic setbacks (Plan International UK).
  • Schools are meant to uplift students, yet too many fall through the cracks, unseen and unheard.
  • ‍ The student-teacher dynamic is both powerful and fragile—what happens when kindness isn’t enough?

"September" isn’t just a film—it’s a mirror reflecting the harsh truths of our education system. Told with raw honesty and deep humanity, it will spark urgent conversations about poverty, privilege, and the barriers that keep young people from thriving.
