Serengeti Scholars Program
Over the past four years of conducting fieldwork in Tanzania, I have been helped immeasurably by many generous, talented and highly motivated individuals working to study and conserve the cultural and natural resources of this incredible country. I can never return enough thanks for the extensive network of bush support that has ensured my safety, delivered mechanical miracles and lifted the burden of PhD anxieties with the perfect combination of creativity, good humor and warm beer. On top of all of this, this community is quite literally the future of conservation in Tanzania.
In an effort to support this invaluable network of local scientists, field assistants and real-life fairy godmothers/fathers, I am starting this scholarship fund to help cover the cost of tuition and school supplies for them and their families.
To start out, I will focus on supporting primary school education for the daughters of researchers in our group. Tanzania (and the world) is in need of well educated female leaders and and it is easiest to have a big impact with small donations at this age. For example, 100% of your donation will go directly to the costs below:
$5 = 2 packs of crayons or 30 pencils
$25 = one school uniform or tracksuit
$150 = one quarter of private school education
$450 = one year of private school education
At the beginning of each school term, I will deliver all funds directly to the parents of the beneficiaries via a mobile payment app (Mpesa) and they will provide proof of deposit to the school's bank account. Parents will also provide confirmation of enrollment at the end of each school year, along with any updates on the students' progress that they would like to share.
Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions or would like your donation to go to a specific item. And if now is not a good time to donate, this fundraiser will be ongoing, so please feel free to re-visit at any time.
Thank you so much for reading and helping to support our community.
With love,
Lacey
