Remembering Serenity

Hi folks. This is going to be a long story, so please bear with me.

Over the last few months, my best friend, her husband, and their little family have endured more than their share of challenges. I’m asking for help on their behalf. Shannon and Ashleigh lost their home in August and had to put all of their belongings in storage. Ashleigh was pregnant with baby Ronan at the time, and she was also high risk with placenta previa. Shannon was working to support his little family as well as his sister and her baby. Christmas time came around and Shannon injured himself at work and was laid off because he claimed WCB. His sister’s landlord wasn’t willing to resign the lease due to Shannon and Ashleigh living there. They helped with December rent and at first the landlord was willing to add Shannon and Ashleigh to the lease but two days later after talking to the office, they got a move out package and a letter stating they had to be out by December 30th 2023. They luckily were able to get one more month due to everything happening at the time. stayed in a pretty rough motel while they went to viewings for places.

Ashleigh went into labor in early February, giving birth to Ronan February 13th. She brought baby Ronan “home” to the hotel shortly after. Finally at the end of February, they were able to move into the apartments they have now. The landlady did them a major favour by holding these apartments and working with them and Jordan’s principle and other assistance. While they were staying at the hotel, Shannon and Ashleigh lost all of their belongings that they had in storage, as well as their children’s belongings and priceless family heirlooms. They’re starting completely over.

After a few very hard months, it wasn’t over. On March 7th, Serenity (12yrs old) was admitted into the stollery. She was found unconscious in her room and spent nearly a week in a diabetic coma. She had no history of diabetes. After her chemistry was worked out she regained consciousness, but had a bad cough. They found that she had contracted pneumonia. The pneumonia killed part of her left lung. Fluid had built-up and needed to be drained and her right lung developed similar symptoms. Cultures found the black fungus Mucor in her lungs. Treatment began immediately and Serenity was sedated and put back on a ventilator. Unfortunately further complications arose. The medical staff did everything they could to try to help her and to keep her and to keep her stable long enough for the treatments to work. Her condition deteriorated quickly and her lungs could not keep up. Serenity was removed from life-support early in the morning of March 31 2024. I’m asking for help for everything they need. From things for baby Ronan, things for their daughter Willow, to things for the house, and things for Shannon and Ashleigh, as well as costs for the funeral and celebration of life.
