Please support my friend Sergio who is currently in detention in River Correctional Facility in Ferriday, Louisiana. Sergio, who is 25, came to the United States to ask for asylum in November 2018. He presented himself to Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) at the San Ysidro port of entry near San Diego. Since then, he has been incarcerated.
While Sergio passed his credible fear interview, meaning that the U.S. government found that he has a credible fear of returning to his home country, he could still be deported. In immigration court he is not entitled to an attorney, so without funds he will be forced to argue a complicated legal case without representation in the extremely inhospitable Jena, Louisiana immigration court.
Please consider donating to his legal defense fund. We need to raise funds ASAP to hire a trusted attorney referred to us by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). Sergio's next court case is March 6th. In order to ask the judge for an extension, we need to have found counsel. Any additional funds will be used for his commissary, phone fees, and for resettlement once he is released and can move to Long Island, NY where his U.S. citizen aunt lives.
Sergio's case is far from abnormal. At many ports of entry along the U.S.-Mexico border asylum seekers must wait weeks just to ask for asylum, infringing on their rights under international and U.S. law. After they present themselves to CBP, some asylum seekers are being returned to Mexico while their cases are pending, another flagrant violation of their rights. Many migrants like Sergio must wait in detention for months dispersed across the country, far from family and friends.
Without building a more extensive physical wall, the Trump administration has erected many significant barriers to seeking asylum in the United States. Building on existing infrastructure, the Trump administration is constructing a fortress nation where a false promise of safety is offered to an ever-shrinking few behind miliarized walls.
But solidarity knows no borders. While those in power seek to divide us along many lines, including citizens and non-citizens, people are offering solidarity and support from the bottom up.
