Service Dog for Type 1 Diabetic Child
Donation protected
Diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes, Micah is using his God given talents to raise money for a Service Dog.
It’s no easy task, these specialized dogs are not covered by insurance and require a year of training before they will ever come home.
Not to be dismayed, Micah set up a lemonade stand. Hustling all passerbys. (Amazon Employees included). He has taken it on the road. Going to the people via park, and even going door to door!
As a type 1 diabetic, Micah requires 24/7 monitoring by his parents. To adapt to this change mom stays up late and dad wakes up early giving 24/7 coverage. After 4 years of testing this has for them become the best way of protecting him. This special service dog would be able to detect his lows while sleeping, provide him more Geographic freedom when he is with friends, and be a companion for Micah; and another set of eyes for his parents managing his health.
UPDATE 9.7.24
We have been able to reduce the funds needed to raise thanks to donation of the dog. Micah got to interview different candidates to find a good match and we did. Micah has named him "Shadow".
With this change it also modified our original plan of getting the dog arriving fully trained but losing bonding time and verification of matching a good fit for the two. We will be using a different training program that will have the dog with us sooner and make us more involved in the training process as well as knowledgeable.
We are able to break the payments to get things underway. Using the funds raised thus far Shadow is receiving his discipline and obedience training for the next few weeks before finally coming to live with us. (exact date TBD) We are being provided updates and education of our own to continue that once he comes to his new home. The kids are being prepped with responsibilities and Mom and Dad are gathering the essentials we will need for not only owning a dog but a service dog.
After that his continued training and scent training will begin. This process can take 9-14 months depending on a number of factors. The nice thing is Shadow and Micah will be together through out that entire process as well as reducing the total cost needed for him to be fully trained. There is extra effort for everyone involved but ultimately we feel it's a better approach and has greater benefits. We are all very excited and grateful to see how fast everything is happening.
