Raise money for Millie

My Mom, Millie, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1976. I was just two years old. She was completely wheelchair bound by the time I entered college. She has been a brave fighter for the past 40 years with my amazing father standing right beside her and her family supporting them all the way!

On March 8, 2009 that all changed. My father passed away after battling throat and lung cancers for more than six years. Dad had lovingly cared for mom up until the moment he passed. After, my Dad's passing my husband and I moved our two small children from our lives in Maryland to my childhood home in order to take care of mom in New Jersey. My son started kindergarten, I got a job, and we settled in as a family. In an effort to save my childhood home, my children's new home, and all my father built, Mom had a lawyer transfer the deed for the house to us. As her daughter and now primary care giver we thought we were following the letter of the law. My husband and I worked hard to provide a safe and loving home for my kids and my mom which proved very challenging as mom's health continued to decline. Her MS became more then we could medically and physically handle.

In 2014 Mom was admitted to the hospital and then transferred to a long term care facility by her doctor's recommendation. Once admitted to the long care facility the process to get Medicaid began.

Currently, Mom is in a legal battle with both Medicaid and the long term care facility for payment of care because she had "too many assets" during the 5 year look back period Medicaid uses to establish eligibility. Neither my Mom nor my husband and I are able to pay for a lawyer because all her money, her social security and my dad's pension, is transferred directly to the long term care facility and my husband and I already survive paycheck to paycheck. My family and I are trying to hand the fact that we may lose our only home but if Mom is unable to obtain an elder care attorney to fight this case she will be discharged from the long term care facility. Being without 24 hour a day professional medical care puts mom's health and safety at risk and is against doctor's orders. As she is unable to dress herself, bathe herself, and generally take care of herself, 24 hour care is essential.

Any money generously donated will be used to pay lawyer fees accrued during this legal battle to ensure the safety and security of my mom, Millie Spino.
