DEDICATION DATE - OCTOBER 26, 2016 - 10:00AM
PACIFIC VIEWS EVENT CENTER - MCB CAMP PENDLETON

For those of you that don't know the story of Reckless, she was a small Mongolian mare that was so heroic during the Korean War she was officially promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant by the Commandant of the US Marine Corps, a rank never before or since bestowed upon an animal. She's also listed in LIFE Magazine as one of our all-time greatest heroes alongside Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson and Mother Teresa.

During the Battle for Outpost Vegas in March 1953, on one day alone, Reckless made 51 trips from the Ammunition Supply Point to the firing sites, most of the time on her own. She carried 386 rounds of ammunition on her back (over 9,000 lbs) and walked over 35 miles through open rice paddies and up steep mountains with enemy fire coming in at the rate of 500 rounds a minute. Wounded twice, she never stopped. She even shielded Marines going up to the line, and helped carry the wounded to safety. There's no telling how many lives she helped save. MONUMENTS TO A HERO
Our first monument to her was dedicated at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, VA on Friday, July 26, 2013, along with a great exhibit inside the Museum.

But now we are taking her home to Camp Pendleton where Reckless lived out her days and is buried.

We are taking over the traffic circle above and creating a mini-park for the monument, complete with lights and benches.  It will be stunning!

HOW THE MONIES WILL BE USED
We are in the final stages of the monument.  All monies used will be to complete the landscaping and site preparation/pedestal, bronze plaques and get her installed.  The bronze Reckless is sitting at Camp Pendleton in a crate waiting to be installed!  SHE'S GORGEOUS!  But we need the last monies to pay to get the site completed.  We are also placing a bronze marker over her grave at the Stepp Stables on Base.
