Why do I need money?
I have the opportunity to do a residency at the Chicago School of Shoemaking and Leather Arts! I'd be taking classes and private instruction on patternmaking, tailoring, small goods design, molding veg tan leather, and — because I'm me — bootmaking and whipmaking. (I KNOW RIGHT?!)
I lost my jobs in March and have been making ends meet how I can. This will also be my third relocation in 18 months. Getting help covering the cost of the program would be a huge relief of financial stress for me. Less stress = more learning. Also, tbh, donations from my communities would make me feel like my dream isn't silly given the times.
What's my goal?
An apprenticeship or job working with leather would be dope. I'm also interested in studying the cultural role of leather in Black and Indigenous communities. My long term goals include preservation/restoration work and creating leather gear/garments for queer, trans, disabled, and fat bodies.
Where's the money going?
Below is the estimated cost for six classes and 24 hours of private instruction.
Classes: $1255
Private Tutoring: $1580
Studio Use & Materials: $500
Commute: Whatever's left!
Will I be documenting my progress?
Check back later to sign up for emails! Until then, you can follow me on IG (@shaanlashun) for random highlights.
