Upon his discharge from the Marine Corps, Maasi began training under the direction of the legendary combat master James Cheatham in Newark, New Jersey.
The untimely death of Master Cheatham in 1966, caused a major shift in Maasi’s training when he began training in Burmese Bando under Dr. U Maung Gyi after a period in between with NYC Chinese martial arts Grandmaster Alan Lee. Dr. Gyi introduced Maasi to the internal system of Burma, the ‘Bando Monk System’ of meditation and self- defense. Maasi’s focus is based upon the spiritual warrior practices of South East Asia and the African Diaspora.
