Shahn Place Inc Fundraiser

Shahn Place Inc. was created in 1983, the dream of John and Patricia Wesley, as a non-profit organization for children and adults with special needs and IDD (intellectual and developmental disabilities). The name "Shahn Place" was a personification of that dream. They wanted to create a safe haven for those who society Shuns because of their disabilities.

For 38 years Shahn Place Inc. has stood proudly at 2200 E. Ledbetter Dr, true to the dream that led to its inception. In recent years, the commitment to that dream has been passed to John and Patricia's only son Kamel Wesley.

In early 2019, Kamel launched a fundraising effort to elevate and expand the dream of his parents. He sought to turn the 4,000 square foot building on the west side of the campus, to an assisted living facility for those clients capable of living independently in attempt to maximum their capabilities. The bid to complete this project was $200,000.00. The work was underway when Shahn’s Place Inc. was dealt a crippling blow by an unprecedented pandemic.

Enrollment suffered and there was a dramatic decline in attendance when parents and guardians were either laid off or forced to work from home. The dream was deferred but only temporarily. Persevering through several hardships Kamel Wesley revitalized Shahn's Place Inc. emerging from the biggest economic shutdown throughout its inception.

Presented with the daunting task of a special needs facility we resumed work in the summer of 2021. During this time several clients were identified as potential boarders, with hope of having their own place in time for the Christmas Holidays.

On November 27, 2021, Mr. Wesley and his wife were awakened by a fire alarm detector located at Shaun’s Place Incorporated. Upon arrival, flames were still visible from the roadway, the entire west side of the assisted living/independent care facility was destroyed. In speaking with the fire marshal, he stated that a homeless individual broke in the facility to start a fire keep warm and it got out of their control resulting in half of the building being destroyed.

Shahn Place Inc. has been a pillar of the community for nearly 40 years, and we need your help to continue provide services for the mentally challenged/disabled. It is our goal to carry on the legacy of our parents to we provide services to special needs children and adults in the community.

We are asking the community for their help. We would like to say thank you to everyone in advance for all your prayers and donations.
