Shana's Dream Team

Dear Friends,

On September 14th, Shana Ledet Qualls suffered a severe bleeding stroke.  Fortunately, she had the presence of mind to call a neighbor for help and by the grace of God she made it to Lafayette General Medical Center. She was rushed into surgery and a tennis ball sized clot was removed from the back of her brain.  These types of strokes are most often fatal, but not only did our resilient friend survive surgery, she fought through a second surgery to patch a spinal fluid leak. The biggest blessing is that she has no memory loss, limited mobility in all of her limbs, and no speech impairment. After 44 days in the hospital she has finally made it home to begin the long journey to recovery.  There is no predicting how long it will take for her to fully recover, but she is receiving daily physical therapy, her family is by her side, and she has a determined spirit.

Although Shana’s wonderful employer provided her with insurance and a paycheck through the end of the year, after that point she will not have any form of income. She is a long way from returning to her working life. She has begun the process to hopefully qualify for disability, but has been told that it can take upwards of 8 months. Medical bills along with normal daily expenses are piling up, so we are reaching out to Shana’s many, many friends, students, fellow actors, “adopted” children, and neighbors to help raise funds to take care of these expenses, giving her peace of mind so she can focus on her healing.

If you are reading this, then you are probably one of those lucky people whose life was touched by this amazing woman.  If you know Shana, you know her generosity to others is boundless.  She gives tirelessly to her job, her family, her community and several arts organizations for children that would not exist without her. Whether she is your friend, your mentor, your teacher or your director, she is always there for you.  Shana raised four wonderful children and has four beautiful grandchildren who are dedicated to the recovery of their mother and Maman.  Her family is deeply grateful for any and all help, donations and prayers in this trying time.

Thank you.
