The Backstory
On December 11th our mom, Shanda Booze Barnes, tested positive for COVID-19. She was 47 with no underlying conditions. She never smoked and was otherwise healthy.
Our mom was a nurse for 25 years. She loved her job and the people she worked with. She was generous, kind, beautiful, funny, loyal, and most of all selfless. She loved my brother and I more than anything in this world. She was a light to everyone around her. Words can’t even describe the hole in our lives that she used to fill.
On Tuesday night, December 15th, her oxygen dropped to a critical level and we took her to the hospital, and she was admitted on December 16th. Further testing discovered extensive pneumonia in both of her lungs due to Covid-19 so she was placed on supplemental oxygen. On December 25th, after fighting as long as she could to breathe on her own, she was placed on a ventilator. On December 30th she had a pulmonary embolism that caused her to go into cardiac arrest. They were able to resuscitate her quickly, but required a chest tube for a collapsed lung. On December 31st, she was placed on dialysis because her kidneys had shut down. They also discovered her left lung had collapsed necessitating a second chest tube insertion. On January 3rd, both of her pneumothorax had decreased, and she was stable. However, on Tuesday January 5th, she was too unstable for a CT scan. Her stats started to drop. The decision was made to not move her until we spoke with the doctor.
On Wednesday January 6th, the doctor informed us that our mother wasn’t doing well. In her opinion, our mom wouldn’t likely recover from this. If she did survive, her quality of life would be greatly affected.
After much thought and conversations with family and those close to our mother, the tough decision was made to let her go. Our mother was a hospice nurse for twenty-five years. As such, she was comfortable having uncomfortable conversations with us about quality of life, death, and her wishes. Ultimately, this was a great relief to her family. We knew exactly what she wanted. On January 7th, we made the difficult decision to put our sweet mom on comfort care. At 1:47 AM on January 7th, with her two kids and parents by her side, our mom went to heaven. She left this world surrounded by love and fighting with all her strength. We know she’s resting peacefully in Heaven with our Lord and Savior.

How You Can Help
We are devastated by the loss of our mother. To offset expenses incurred by her untimely passing and 23 day hospital stay we are accepting donations. We have created a “Go Fund Me” account for those that have expressed the desire to donate. We appreciate all donations, prayers, and kind words during this difficult time.
Thank you.
