Shane Shepard got a NEW HEART!!!

Donation protected
Shane was born with the most lethal of all congenital heart defects: Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. This is when an otherwise perfectly healthy baby is born with only half of a heart and virtually no aorta. The surgical options for babies born with HLHS have improved, but virtually all children who are lucky enough to survive childhood with this condition will eventually require a heart transplant, and it's Shane's turn!

Shane has endured and survived several extremely complicated heart surgeries over his lifetime, and he's has had to carefully guard his health in preparation for this opportunity of a new heart. He received that long awaited phone call this week and finally received a new heart two days ago! This is merely the beginning of this amazing blessing and trial for the Shepard family. They are absolutely filled with relief and gratitude that this day has finally come for their son, but as you can imagine, going through this process during a world-wide pandemic brings multiple challenges and unfortunately, a whole slew of unforeseen expenses. Shane's surgery was performed at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital on the Stanford Campus. He is expected to remain in the hospital for the next 2-4 weeks and barring any complications he will be released, on the condition he will live within 30 miles of the hospital in Palo Alto for the following 90 days. Since Shane is now 24 years old, his family doesn't qualify for some of the services once offered to families in this situation, and living near the hospital is extremely expensive. Shane has to be in a clean, sterile environment for that 90 day period, and the cost to rent an apartment is astronomically high in Palo Alto, so the family has opted to live in an RV trailer where they can control the environment for Shane to remain healthy and heal.  The least expensive place they could find to park their trailer is nearly $2500/month and is actually outside that 30 mile radius requirement, which his doctors don't like at all. I believe his family would chose to live closer if they could make it happen financially, which is where we all come in.

Please join me in helping this incredibly giving family through this awesome blessing and trial. Of course Shane has been blessed with a new heart, but the challenges that accompany this blessing are mounting, and we want the Shepard family's focus to be on helping Shane recover and get healthy enough to eventually move back home. He has a beautiful baby girl who will be waiting (probably very impatiently) to see her daddy so if we can all pitch in to make sure he has the best shot at getting home as quickly as possible, I know they would all be so very grateful.
