It is with overwhelming sadness that we have lost another young person related to our tribe. Shawkat Al Hourani, better known as Shaq, left this earth on Friday, September 20, 2019. Shaq was born May 27, 2000 to Eihab Al Hourani and Leticia Al Hourani (nee Velazquez). He is survived by his parents and siblings Malec, Jenna and Yasmeen. He is already missed terribly by them and countless other family members and friends.
Shaq was incredibly bright and kind. He had a smile that would light up a room and was contagious to anyone around him. He was a loving son and a good friend. Truth is, the loss of this life with so much potential is a loss to many communities.
As a mother who recently lost her own child just months ago, I am grieved for this family. It is incredibly unfair to his mother to have a turn crying for her baby. This is not the way it is supposed to be. It is unfair Leti will not experience another hug or phone call. It is unfair that she will have to endure this heartbreak for the rest of her life. I know with everything in me that Leti loves her children more than anything and that all she wanted to be was a loving and supportive mom. She would do anything to protect all of her children.
Leti’s sister Xochitl is one of my best friends. She recently graduated to “sister” because bonds between women don’t get much closer than that. She is my sister because the moment she found out my daughter was in trouble, she rushed to be with me, to hold me and to cry with me, barely leaving my side for days. Within the past four months, she has continued to cry for me and for the loss of my child. She has helped me in establishing the #breanaland project, to bring awareness to the issues that are taking our children, like addiction, mental health issues, and suicide.
Sadly, despite his family’s concerns and offers for help, Shaq died from apparent suicide.
As parents, we do not always consider that our children will pass away before us. I was stunned when it happened to me, and I had no idea how we would be able to provide our child a worthy send off. However, my friends, including the Velazquez family came through for me. It is now time to be there for them as well.
Please donate to Shaq’s Homegoing services. No amount is too small, as every dollar is needed and appreciated. Please help to relieve this family from some of the financial stress so that they can continue their grieving process without additional anxiety. This is such a horrible tragedy, such a devastating loss, and we would love to be able to provide Shaq’s family and friends the opportunity to pay their respects and love on him just one more time. Shaq’s short life was extremely impacting and deserves to be celebrated.
Thank you for your consideration, and God bless you and your family strongly.
