Shared Bylines 2025: BIPOC Journalism Scholarships

Donation protected
Shared Bylines is a scholarship and mentorship program, backed by seasoned journalists, who know that breaking into the industry – and succeeding – is no easy task, especially for Black Canadians, Indigenous peoples and other people of colour. Shared Bylines aims to overcome those barriers by offering financial and professional support for promising student journalists who have set their sights on much-needed change, who have traditionally been underrepresented in Canadian media and who are ready to do the work.

Heading into Year 5 (!!), what started as just $3,000 and a GoFundMe has turned into $78,000 in total scholarships, 100-plus students and nearly double that in mentors, volunteers and guest speakers.

We are back asking for your help to give more students the financial support needed for our scholarships. Even just a few dollars goes a long way for a Shared Bylines scholarship recipient. Every dollar you contribute goes directly towards scholarship funding, as all our operations are run on a volunteer basis. While our funding sources have varied from year to year, we have always been very humbled by your support toward our crowdfunding efforts. Let's keep the tradition going!

If you can’t give at this time, you can donate your time and expertise, please contact us at sharedbylines at gmail dot com to learn more.

Shared Bylines scholarship recipients will be announced in late summer. We appreciate your contributions and will keep you updated here and @sharedbylines on Twitter and Instagram.

Shared Bylines aims to make Canadian journalism a more inclusive and equitable community, and we believe that supporting young journalists of colour is key to achieving that. We also believe that the barriers to sustainable journalism careers are both economic and cultural. That’s why financial support and professional mentorship are equally important to the success of Shared Bylines. Find out more about us, and other ways to contribute, on our website.
