Sharon Courtney Needs a Liver Transplant Immediately!

Family, friends, classmates, and acquaintances of Sharon Courtney, Norwalk Iowa, Class of 1978.

In 2022, Sharon went through a frightening medical emergency. After several days in the hospital, she was given the life changing diagnosis of Cirrhosis of the liver. I asked Sharon to give me a bit more information and this is her story.

“I need a new liver!!!!

Two years ago, I was rushed to Mercy Hospital due to severe blood loss. I was three pints low on blood. After five days in the hospital, I was diagnosed with stage 4 Cirrhosis of the liver. No, I'm not now, nor have I ever been, a drinker. I am fatigued constantly, freezing all the time, and I can’t even do simple housework any longer. I am also having trouble walking due to my enlarged liver and spleen now.

Full- time employment became too hard, and I had to go on disability and now we live paycheck to paycheck. Well, the time has come that I need a liver transplant to live; the hospital will not put me on the list until I have the money to cover the remaining amount that Medicare does not pick up. I really need this help to live.

I know times are tough. Anything will help and whatever you can give is greatly appreciated. Thank you!”

Sharon is awaiting a transplant! Before surgeons perform the transplant, Sharon must come up with the co-pay. The co-pay is roughly $5,000, which is why we are asking for help. Being on disability is a challenge on its own; but with the concerns and stress of a serious disease always looming overhead, that heavy burden becomes even greater! The longer the wait for her life saving procedure, the more stress and anxiety her body is enduring; none of which is conducive to her weakened state. We are asking for your assistance to get her co-pay sooner rather than later. The longer she waits the worse her liver will get. The only treatment to affect stage 4 Cirrhosis is a liver transplant.

We all know Sharon, some of us very well, some as casual acquaintances, but her family and closest friends know her best and know that she is a fighter and will continue to fight through this health challenge. Can you please help us raise the funds Sharon needs for her transplant? Like Sharon said, times are tough, any amount will help!!! Let’s get Sharon on the road to a longer, healthier life as soon as possible.

In case you, like me, don’t really know much about this disease, I have added a link to a Mayo Clinic video addressing Cirrhosis of the liver.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read our plea for help. Your time and your kindness are very much appreciated!!!
