If you could go back and do it all again, what would you do with your life?
When asked this recently, I reflected for only a few minutes because I could not imagine doing anything else with my life. I have had a great career working with children, pre-service and in-service teachers, other faculty within and across universities, and even children, teachers, and faculty in other states and countries. What is better than being an educator? For me, after 42 years (and still counting), nothing is better.
After 26 years teaching and leading in the School of Education at North Carolina Central University, I have committed to raising funds for the Sharon L. Spencer Endowed Scholarship for future teachers at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) which had a great impact on my life. Many great future teachers and in-service teachers touched my life at NCCU. My students helped me grow as an educator with their different environments, perspectives, and professional growth needs. Of course, my NCCU colleagues helped me grow, too.
What is an endowed scholarship? An endowed scholarship keeps producing income because the money is invested and the interest is used for the scholarships. Therefore, your contribution helps fund student scholarships for future teachers not just once, but for years.
Why a teacher scholarship? If you can think of just one teacher who touched your life, you should give to this scholarship for preparing new teachers. I have known many wonderful, competent and caring teachers. I hope that I have touched your life in some way. Without a scholarship, I would not have been on this amazing journey myself. Scholarships help fund the education of those who otherwise may not be able to attend college.
What do I need? I need $15,000 more to establish this scholarship. I can’t do it alone. Please give once, or give a small amount more than once. And, please share this GoFundMe with family and friends (and ask them to share it with their family and friends). Education is the key to changing lives; teachers make the difference. The Sharon L. Spencer Endowed Scholarship will help fund the education of many future educators for decades to come, educators who will touch the lives of many children.
