Shary and Sam Farr Legacy Orchard Project
Shary and Sam Farr have generously hosted many of us as guests at Point 16. Over the years, due to their hard work, we’ve seen the property slowly evolve from a rugged site with incomparable views to a spectacular gathering place, with spacious lawns, a dance floor, lush flower gardens, an outdoor kitchen, and more.
The Orchard - The Farrs have now turned their attention to the terrace below the east garden as the perfect place to create an organic fruit tree orchard. Their long-time friends Christina Orth and Susan Clark, who served in the Peace Corps and has been a long-term supporter of UCSC’s Center of Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS), want to make this vision a reality. This will be a tribute to all that the Farrs have done for the community, especially Sam’s founding of the of the Organic Caucus in Congress and his support of the UCSC Farm and Garden and CASFS.
We are working with an agroecologist who will review soil samples, visit the property, and advise us on the number and variety of mature heritage trees to be purchased, the best source for these trees, steps to prepare the soil and plant and maintain the orchard and surrounding garden areas. We would like Sam and Shary to enjoy the fruits from these trees sooner than later!
Birthday Gift Option - Many have asked what Sam might want as a birthday gift on this special occasion of his 80th birthday. We are suggesting a contribution to the Shary and Sam Farr Legacy Orchard Project in lieu of a gift. Please consider a contribution of any amount with which you are comfortable to help get the project off the ground. Contributions can easily be made on this go-fund me site.
