Shawn Cohen's Cancer Journey

Hi, my name is Kiara and I'm fundraising for my husband Shawn who was diagnosed with Stage 3 Bile Duct Adenocarcinoma a week before his 50th birthday.

Shawn had some symptoms in late January of this year, when he became jaundiced, we went to the ER. From there he had an endoscopy where thankfully Dr. Rahimi with Baylor Scott and White decided to biopsy his bile duct because he saw something strange. A few days later he called us with the diagnosis that what he biopsied was cancerous.

There were more CT scans, and we had to wait an agonizing week over his birthday to find out if it had metastasized. If it had, he wouldn't be eligible for surgery and he'd be Stage 4.

Thank goodness all of the CT scans showed that it hadn't spread to any other organs, and he was eligible for the Whipple procedure to remove the a third of his pancreas, some small intestine, and the bile duct with the cancer.

Shawn had the Whipple done on Feb 8th and is still recovering. It is a long and painful recovery expected to last at least 6 weeks. Once his body is healed enough, he will have to go through Chemo and/or radiation.

We are hopeful that he can make a full recovery, and beat this rare and aggressive form of cancer, but in the meantime he is unable to work. We expect that he will be out of work for a long period of time and aren't sure when he will be back. While we are taking steps to try and apply for help, it's a long process.

The money that you are so generously donating will go to help with every-day expenses while he is unable to work such as - medical bills, car payments, preschool tuition for Hunter, rent, groceries, utility bills, etc.

These funds will also be used to help with house cleaning, items to help Shawn with his recovery, alternative therapies not covered by insurance, and any other unexpected expenses.

I would be happy to update anyone on Shawn's progress and we are hopeful that he will be able to make a full recovery.
