Shawn Harrington recovery from stroke

Hello, my name is Mel Davis and I am raising funds for my mom and stepdad after my stepdad, Shawn suffered an unexpected stroke. He had been helping my mom with basement flooding and home repairs when he suddenly couldn't speak and started to lose strength of the right side of his body. On January 16, he was admitted to Rhode Island Hospital where they found a clot in his left carotid artery and another on the left side of his brain. They did a procedure to remove the clots but unfortunately the brain damage had already occurred. He was just recently transferred to Spaulding Rehab in Boston where he is receiving speech, OT and PT daily. He is progressing well, but has significant balance issues, no functional use of his right arm and severe communication deficits. They are anticipating he will be going home sometime next week but will be requiring 24 hour care at first and requires assistance with all mobility and self care. He will be going to therapy for the next several months which will require frequent trips to Spaulding in Plymouth for speech therapy and Spaulding in Sandwich for OT and PT.

My mom is trying to get the house ready for him to come home. She has had a contractor come out to give her estimates for railings to get into the house, additional railings in the house and bathroom modifications. We don't have the estimated cost yet, but will be several thousand dollars to do the necessary modifications.

In the meantime, Shawn will be unable to work for the foreseeable future. 

I was going to work the week of February vacation as a literacy teacher in my school district, but because of these circumstances, I am now planning on spending February vacation at home to help out. I’m planning to help with his transition, take care of the house and dogs, as well as assisting with transportation to and from appointments.

Any help that you can provide will be so appreciated to get all the home modifications in place and help us support Shawn while he continues his rehabilitation with hopes for a full recovery. ❤️‍
