Shawn, his wife, and two children have lived through Shawn's battle with Stage IV mucosal melanoma. After a lengthy battle and many surgeries, the cancer has returned as a metastasis. Shawn's daughter is graduating from high school in just over a month, Shawn is self-employed without disability insurance, and the medical bills are already a burden on the family. Shawn has a high deductible to pay before he will go to MD Anderson in Houston for treatment.
In late March 2015, Shawn had a scheduled primary care appointment. After reporting persistent testicular discomfort, the doctor immediately ordered an ultrasound and discovered that Shawn required surgery for suspected testicular cancer. In early April 2015, the testicle was removed and the doctors found mucosal melanoma, a metastasis from the original site in the sinuses. This is one of the worst forms of cancer that has spread in Shawn's body.
At his most recent oncology appointment, the doctors ordered additional MRI and PET scans to determine where the cancer has spread within the body. Pending these scans, Shawn does not yet require chemotherapy, but will require it if any further metastases are discovered. His oncologist has also recommended a clinical trial. He will be travelling MD Anderson in Houston to determine the best course of treatment, and will not be able to work during these appointments. He will have many expenses travelling to and from and staying in Houston and will need support.
Shawn and his family are concerned for what may happen in the near future. Currently, Shawn spends weekdays in Arlington for work and travels home on weekends. The reoccurence of the cancer has made this especially difficult for the family to be apart. Shawn has two primary concerns:
-- To move the whole family from Arlington (where Shawn works) and Comanche (where the family lives) to Lampasas, where Shawn has family and friends and both Shawn and Amy can work. This would allow the family to be together.
-- To prepare for when Shawn loses his ability to work and has to stop working during treatment.
To make this move and pay for the continued medical expenses, Shawn has started a new GoFundMe. He thanks everyone for their continued love and prayers on his behalf during the most difficult trial of his life. He firmly believes in God's power to provide for all of our needs.
1 Corinthians 10:13 - "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it."
James 5:11 - "Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy."
