She Is Strong - Martha’s Breast Cancer Fight

Hi everyone! My name is Katie and I’m putting together a GoFundMe account to help lessen the financial burden for my dear friend Martha Phillips and her family.

Martha is one of my nearest and dearest, to say the least. For those of you who know her, you are likely aware of her recent diagnosis of breast cancer. You would also know that Martha is as tough as they come, a fighter through and through! For those who do not know Martha- she is an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. To know her, is to love her. She is very thoughtful and is always one of the first people to offer help.

 

In 2010, Martha was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Though MS is treatable, there is no cure. However, after stem cell treatment in Panama, she has enjoyed 4 years medication and symptom free.  Martha applied knowledge of holistic wellness gained from managing MS to improve the lives of others, as well. Her life was back on track, and she was happy and healthier than ever and doing what she does best- helping others. Just when Martha thought she could stop waiting for the other shoe to fall with MS, out of left field came this baseball sized lump! Within 10 days of getting it checked out, she was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma  Grade 3- Stage 2-(aggressive). The good news is that it is treatable/curable and together with her doctors, chose to be aggressive with treatment. Martha had a double mastectomy on September 2nd and started her first chemotherapy treatment on September 28th. She will continue to go for treatments during the next five months, with radiation and reconstructive surgery to follow throughout the next year. This isn’t going to be an easy journey and it's going be expensive.

With Martha working fewer hours and with increased medical costs and unexpected expenses, there is a financial strain. For the next 12 months, everything will be harder in every way. I’m hopeful Martha and her family will not have the added stress of worrying about covering the basics and medical costs, but instead have the opportunity to focus on Martha’s recovery and healing. Many people want to help- if you can, this is the best way at this time. Please take this opportunity to assist Martha, who has selflessly taken care of so many others.
