Shelia continues her fierce fight with style and grace. She has never been a quitter and is not to about to start now. It is difficult to watch my strong niece fight this battle, knowing her love and zest for life. You would be amazed by her always smiling, and making others smile. She doesn't ask herself, why her, she knows that their has to be a purpose in her journey, her hope is to share her journey with others that it may make their journey just a little easier.

This most recent and difficult journey started back in October 2020, Shelia was diagnosed with Stage IV, metastatic breast cancer to her bones and liver. This is her third and toughest battle yet, as this is a never ending battle, she will receive treatment for the rest of her life, either until there are no more options or she chooses to stop for her quality of life and enjoy that time with her family making memories. Believe me she continues to treasure every day and moment and makes new memories.

She began treatment at the University of Penn after several months of treatment, Shelia had indications that the current treatment regimen wasn’t working after three months of requesting scans and being denied, she took matters into her own hands and reached out to MD Anderson for a consult in hopes of getting into a clinical trial at the number once cancer center in the country.  Upon her arrival at MD Anderson and having multiple tests and scans, she was correct the tumors in her liver had continued to grow.

Shelia began her journey at MD Anderson in Houston, the beginning of March, after receiving care back in Pennsylvania and having to advocate for herself with her care team.  She had been accepted into a clinical trial and while complete oh her biopsy, the doctors had noticed significant tumor growth in the liver and this growth occurred in a few short weeks of her arrival at MD Anderson. Her care team immediately made a new plan and started her on a very harsh combination of chemotherapy in hopes of slowing the tumors in the liver amd getting her back into a clinical trial.

Shelia is a fighter and surrounded by an amazing support system. She will not give up and won’t accept no for an answer.  For those of you that know her, it should come as no surprise that she got here doing her own research,  making her own phone calls to MD Anderson with no one calling on her behalf. She has been very fortunate to get in with their Advanced Breast Cancer Team, that are ready for whatever curve comes at them. Our family truly believes that the love, support, and prayers have given her this opportunity.

She travels back and forth from home to Houston, but has been staying for longer periods of time during her treatment weeks, as each additional round of chemo, makes traveling a little more difficult and the airline industry is not making travel easy. She is at the point where she requires to have someone with her during her time in Houston, due to her new treatment regimen, to ensure her safety after treatment.

We ask for your continued prayers for her and her family,  that the new chemo works to slow the tumors down, keep them stable and that new options come out. The newest care plan involves a during recently released from a clinical trial for Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

She continues to fight the VA to help with costs and is hopefully getting somewhere with new legislation that is being introduce and her persistence for them to recognize the disease as a result of the Burn Pit Exposures, Super fund sites and the asbestos she was exposed to at Offutt AFB that remains an active worksite today continuing to exposure our Air Force Personnel. She continues to send appeals and has requested a trial at the higher level, they have yet to respond, this would involve her appearing before a board in Washington, DC. This should not be a challenge for our veterans, there energy should be spent on their health.

Shelia continues to give this fight everything she’s got and is no way ready to quit.
