Shemika Johnson also known as 'Mika', or '4-J' ( the number 4 for the four letters in M-I-K-A and the letter "J' for her last name Johnson), and some would call her, 'Pretty King' because she had a big smile that would light up the room. Followed by her boisterous laugh that would resonate anywhere and would turn any frown into a smile.
Shemika Johnson was born on November 26th, 1980 , she was the second born out of 9 children. Mika grew up on the east side of Plano where she served her community wholeheartedly.
Mika, loved basketball and started playing at the tender age of 5. She attended AAU basketball summer league, the 3-On-3 Hoop-It-Up tournaments every summer.
Mika's love for basketball also influenced her to mentor upcoming basketball players.
Shemika graduated Plano East in 1999, she played basketball at Collin County Community College where she earned an Associate degree in business. She had dreams and aspirations of obtaining her MBA and owning her own clothing line. She always stated she would have businesses to create employment within her community.
Mika had the privilege to try out for the WNBA and she had numerous basketball scholarships but turned them down to take care of her family.
Mika, worked for the City of Plano for 10 years at the Douglass Community Center. She has mentored over 1000 children and youth. Additionally, she volunteered with the elders in the community by spending time with them, playing board games and telling jokes. During the summer, she would make sack lunches and go to MLK to serve the homeless population. Mika was a founding member of the Boys and Girls Club and Keystone Club.
After the passing of their grandmother, Mika became the matriach of the family. She also had custody of her twin sisters. Mika, was the glue that held the family. Her self-less heart and giving spirit made her available to everyone at anytime.
At the end of 2017, Mika was diagnosed with Stage 4, colon cancer diagnosis and they removed 90% of the colon. Then it spread to liver.
Even during her illness, she received an award for as a Pillar of the Community presented by the Douglass Community Center.
Sadly, on Wednesday, December 18, 2019, Shemika Johnson passed away. Her funeral will be at Shiloh Baptist Church located at 920 14th Street, Plano, Texas 75074 . On Friday December 27th, 2019 at 11 a.m.
