Who are we? Glad you asked!
Our names are Alex Panneton, Kelsey Verzotti, Georgia Bennett, Joel Cumber, Dave Comeau and Seth Johnson! We are in our fourth and final year in the Honours Bachelor of Music Theatre Performance program at Sheridan College (“Sheridan”) in Oakville Ontario.
What are we raising money for? Good question!
The Canadian Music Theatre Project (“CMTP”) at Sheridan College has become an international centre of excellence for the development of new musicals. Over the past two years Sheridan has begun to partner with Chinese theatre practitioners and educators to pioneer contemporary musical theatre and to develop musical theatre talent in China. As part of that effort, this past summer at Sheridan, we were given the opportunity to organize and facilitate a week long musical theatre intensive for a group of children from the iMusicals school in Shanghai, China. The impact the experience had on us was immeasurable. We were ecstatic to see that our passion for musical theatre was shared by young people on the other side of the world. This experience only fuelled our desire to further foster our relationship with our new friends.
In addition to this, Theatre Sheridan has contributed immensely to Canada's growing music theatre footprint. Since its inaugural season, the CMTP has fostered numerous regional productions throughout Canada, as well as the upcoming Broadway premiere of "Come From Away". In fact, the next CMTP season will feature a new musical that will begin development in Shanghai about the life of Dr. Norman Bethune. He was a Canadian physician who made a lasting impact on the Chinese through his medical work. As a part of Prime MinisterJustin Trudeau’s recent State Visit to China, a co-development agreement was signed by Michael Rubinoff ( Associate Dean, Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Sheridan) and Yang Shaolin (General Manager of the prestigious Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre), to work together to make this artistic venture come to life!
We have been provided the opportunity to spend 3 weeks in China over the winter holidays to work with Michael Rubinoff to further the goal of cultivating the development of contemporary music theatre and to strengthen Sheridan’s relationships with its Chinese partners. To assist with the cost, we are raising money to fund this meaningful trip.
How will the money be used? Well...
Though we are receiving some support from other sources, there are still costs to defray. As we raise money for this trip, any surplus funds will go towards a fund to support future student visits to China. Your kind donation would enable us and future Theatre Sheridan interns to continue to be a part of the growing relationship between Sheridan and China. Donations will help cover the costs of flights, accommodations, and various artistic and cultural endeavours while in China.
When do we hope to meet our goal? Listen...
We are hoping to achieve our goal by November 1st, 2016.
What is so unique about this opportunity?
This trip presents several unique opportunities.
Not only will we receive training from industry professionals in Shanghai that will aid in our development as growing theatre artists, we will also be fully immersed in a culture different from our own.
During this trip, we plan to contribute our knowledge and understanding of our craft by means of workshops, classes, and other various outlets. We will be working closely with an increased number of students from the iMusicals school, and participating in workshops with members of the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre, as well as many other international theatre practitioners.
As ambassadors of Sheridan College, we plan to solidify and expand our relationship with the Shanghai theatre community. This relationship started last year with a group of students who traveled to Shanghai with the same goals that we are working towards. We plan to follow in their footsteps and take this legacy one step further.
Every donation brings us one step closer to experiencing this once in a lifetime opportunity.
Thank you so much! :)
