Sherry's story... On the afternoon of September 20th, time stopped for Sherry, Dave and for those who love them. After a week of pain and many tests and scans to discover the source of the pain, they received a phone call that would stop time and drastically change the course of their lives. Sherry was diagnosed with leiomayosarcoma, a rare and incurable cancer of the body’s soft tissues. The tumor in Sherry’s body, which she has named Gilbert, is large in size, approx. 9cm x 7cm. Resection of the tumor is the best chance for survival.

On October 8th, Sherry headed to Houston, Texas to be evaluated by MD Anderson. As mentioned, Sherry’s form of cancer is extremely rare. There are only a handful of hospitals that specialize in this type of sarcoma. MD Anderson is #1 in the country! Their physicians see more of these cases in a week than any other hospital sees in a year. Sherry is blessed to have the best team possible guiding her treatment course. That course of treatment will include 6 rounds of chemotherapy, the first round started at MD Anderson on Saturday, October 12th. After every 2 rounds, another CT scan will be performed to see if the tumor has shrunk. Sherry will be able to receive the remaining chemo treatments in Boise but will need to return to Houston every 6 weeks/2 chemo cycles, for the CT scans. The surgical team is confident that after shrinkage with chemo, they will be able to resect Gilbert, the tumor!

Through all of this, Sherry is determined to stay positive. She appreciates all the support, love, prayer and positive energy that she has already received from friends and family. Sherry, Dave, Ember and Jack have a long road ahead but can do it with everyone’s love and support. Look for updates to this page as new information comes in or as needs are identified for the Stanish family!
