She's Not Special at Next Stage Theatre Festival
Donation protected
She’s Not Special is a musical theatre/hip-hop/comedy hybrid exploring the pressures of Black Excellence. As a Black Muslim Woman (a triple threat!), creator Fatuma Adar is on a mission to free you from the clutches of exceptionalism and teach you how to relish in the joys of mediocrity.
Praise for Adar:
“...equal parts Bo Burnham stand-up set and Pharrell Williams club jam.” - CBC Arts
“...a fast-food-fuelled dadaist poet.” - VICE
The show is being presented as part of Toronto Fringe’s Next Stage Theatre Festival in January. It is co-directed by performer/creator Fatuma Adar (Playback’s 10 to Watch) and Graham Isador (Soulpepper Playwright Unit, GQ). While we’ve applied for numerous grants, we’re also fundraising to cover fees for the show. This includes a band, musical director, stage manager, multiple designers, and a production manager. The goal is to raise 5,000.
If you’d like to contribute out of the goodness of your heart, thank you. If you’d like an incentive to donate, we’re offering the following benefits:
