Meet Matt.

When Matt joined Sunnyhill in the summer of 2019, his journey was far from easy. For years, he grappled with severe behaviors that kept him isolated and disconnected from his community. But everything changed in the fall of 2022 when Matt began receiving support through Sunnyhill’s ABA Behavior Supports service. With the guidance of his dedicated team, Matt set an ambitious goal: to attend a St. Louis Cardinals home game and fully enjoy the ballpark experience.

In April 2023, after months of tireless effort and commitment to a structured token economy, Matt’s perseverance was rewarded. He attended the game, surrounded by cheers, and relished every moment of the Cardinals’ victory, including the ballpark foods he had long dreamed of. Matt’s journey from isolation to empowerment is a testament to the transformative power of the right support.

But Matt’s story is just one of many.

It reminds us that with perseverance and proper resources, every individual’s path to empowerment can be illuminated. Unfortunately, many like Matt still face barriers due to limited access to crucial programs. Health inequity in the U.S. costs $320 billion a year, and the demand for services like those provided by Sunnyhill has never been more urgent.

The Need for Support

Medicaid Limits: In Missouri, Medicaid (MO HealthNet) imposes restrictive income and asset limits—$1,067 per month and $5,909.25 in assets—severely impacting the financial stability of individuals with developmental disabilities, often pushing them toward poverty and homelessness.

Health Inequity Costs: The economic impact of health inequities in the U.S. amounts to $320 billion annually, and it’s projected to rise to $1 trillion by 2040 if left unaddressed. This underscores the critical need for better support for vulnerable populations, including those with developmental disabilities.
