Dear Supportive Art Families,
I typically avoid publicly seeking financial support for my artistic projects; however, I feel compelled to request assistance in this particular instance. Despite considerable volunteer efforts and some financial planning, the costs associated with this ambitious resource development project remain substantial. Our community urgently requires a broader range of educational platforms and proactive investments, especially in a city grappling with persistent challenges stemming from a cycle of ineffective political control and insufficient investment.
Addressing these issues necessitates a commitment to diverse initiatives that confront the real-life challenges faced by families from multicultural backgrounds. These challenges extend beyond mere language barriers; they also encompass a significant lack of representation in senior, mid-level, and frontline leadership across economic, educational, and social spheres.
As a Puerto Rican artist navigating my journey on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, I have encountered persistent challenges in dismantling barriers and confronting modern prejudices, even within the art community itself. It is vital that we advocate for our community and create spaces that authentically reflect our heritages and contributions through public art engagement.
There is an urgent need for accurate historical representation in our country. Latinos have not only been integral to U.S. history but have also played a formative role in shaping it. Unfortunately, many of our community's narratives remain untold within limited classrooms. This absence of inclusion has resulted in a significant gap of lack of education and challenges faced by Latino communities, the largest ethnic group in the United States. Integrating Latino perspectives into history curricula is essential for fostering a more comprehensive understanding of our shared past and empowering future generations.
I am particularly inspired by the legacy of exceptional individuals, such as Gloria Rojas, a trailblazer whose unwavering commitment to our community deserves recognition. We honor her memory, along with the countless Latino families who have tirelessly served and enriched our lives. Their stories and sacrifices form the foundation of this initiative.
My parents have devoted their lives to public service and serve as my guiding light in this endeavor. My mother’s work in the health department and my father’s commitment to the Maryland State Highway Administration for over twenty years exemplify the spirit of dedication and love that is inherent in our Maryland families. From the weary farmworkers to overburdened contractors and the wisdom of our grandmothers, it is these everyday heroes who will be represented in this mural, serving as a beacon of light and voice within our community. This project transcends a mere celebration of heritage; it is a reminder of our shared humanity stories.
The proposed mural will be painted on the 118 Building on Cedar Street in Cambridge, Maryland, and aims to honor those engaged in local agriculture, healthcare, business, and youth education. This project is not solely personal; it embodies a collective vision for healing, connection, and beautification that resonates with us all. Serving as an opportunity for community members engagement and development.
I invite you to join me in bringing this proactive initiative to fruition. Every contribution, regardless of size, will make a meaningful impact and facilitate the educational part of this important public art project. Supporting this endeavor is not merely an investment in creativity; it is an investment in the future of our community and its collective well-being. Your support—whether through sharing this message or contributing in any capacity—represents a rightful investment in the community we cherish. Together, we can create a significant impact and ensure that our stories, culture, needs, and voices are celebrated and acknowledged.
Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to embarking on this meaningful journey alongside all of you.
