Support Siargao Shipping Costs & Medical Supplies

Hi friends! My name is Amanda Hugh, and I'm a graduate student pursuing a Master of Social Work from New York University. Last month, I had the opportunity to engage in trauma support and mental health work in Del Carmen, Siargao Islands, in the Philippines. This beautiful island community was devastated by Typhoon Odette in December 2021, leaving 95% of their home dwellings destroyed. Many of their community buildings, including schools, churches, and health offices and the supplies inside were also destroyed.

Community members shared how they watched the roofs get pulled off their homes as the flood waters rose and ravished the island. Over six months post-Odette, the community is working to rebuild with the support of loved ones and the global community. Many shared that they find hope in God and in the knowledge that there are people beyond the island who have them in their hearts.

Our needs assessment revealed a dire lack of school supplies, books, and medical supplies, among other things. This all falls on top of the obstacles the island community has faced through the COVID-19 pandemic.

I have collected a substantial amount of the items above (except for medical supplies), but I cannot send them until I have the funds to cover the shipping costs. Shipping is $81+/box, and I am aiming to raise $1,000. Anything leftover will be used to ship the next bunch of supplies, as I intend to make this an ongoing effort.
