Shirl the old girl needs our help!! I am sure most of you know Shirley is a long term Karratha/Dampier local who has done SO much for our community over the years. To write a list of the things Shirley has done for our community groups and sporting clubs would be impossible. Shirley has recently had a broken hip and skin cancer which has meant she can no longer continue her work at the Dampier Sports Club. Unfortunately for us this means Shirley will have to relocate to Melbourne (fortunately for them!) to live with her daughter so she is able to undergo chemo and radiotherapy. To say her positive nature, friendly smile and witty humour will be missed around the place would be a huge understatement.
Shirley was recently staying at the women’s refuge in Karratha as it has been difficult to keep up with rent after she had to stop working. The Dampier Mermaid has kindly given Shirley a room until she leaves on the 27th April to meet her son in Perth for the long drive to Melbourne. It was Shirley’s plan to drive her car and her heavy trailer on her own (!) to Perth. With a bit of help from the people who know her I think we can raise enough money to get her car and trailer on a truck to Perth and Shirley safely on a flight. The aim is to raise $3000 for Shirley to assist with food and consumables until the 27th, a flight to Perth and transport for her car/trailer. Any additional funds that may be raised will go to Shirley to assist with relocation and medical costs. Shirley has been blown away by the help she has had already and is so appreciative to everyone. I hope we can show Shirley how many people really do care about her and give her the good Karma she has given us! If anyone deserves some help, she does!
If you would like to say goodbye to Shirley before she heads off she has arranged an afternoon at the Karratha International lounge on Monday the 17th April from 12pm – 8pm.
Cheers.
