Mrs. Shirley Ann Wheaton was born on January 29, 1940 in Cumberland, Maryland. She is the second youngest of five siblings born to James and Addie Smith. Wheaton spent the beginning of her career working as an employee with the United States Postal Services for 3 years. After years of volunteer work with Westinghouse High School, she was offered a role as the Recruiter and Coordinator for the SAM (Science and Mathematics) Program. In this role, Wheaton recruited children from all over the metropolitan Pittsburgh area in Math and Science. She held this position for 15 years. In addition to coaching the Westinghouse Soccer Team, Cheerleading Team, and Auxiliary part of the Band. She held these positions until her retirement in 2005. Wheaton is a Dedicated Member of Mount Ararat Baptist Church; Operation Better Block, Rosedale Rain Garden dedicated to Shirley Wheaton for her tireless work in the community; Mayor Bill Peduto declared January 29, 2020 as Shirley Wheaton Day, this honor was dedicated during her 80th Birthday Celebration; Shirley Wheaton is a community activist and will continue to make it her life’s work to create a better future for the Homewood students, families, and communities. Wheaton tirelessly gives to her community and others; money from this fund will help support with living and caretaker expenses to ensure she can continue all of the incredible work she has started.
